I have gathered some images of characters from Dota 2, specifically looking at the female characters and the monster type characters. As these are the types of characters I want to look into, into putting in my own work.
I went further and took some of my faveourite monsters and made them into silhouettes, to look more closely at them...

Ashley Wood
I really enjoy Woods style and would love to incorporate it into my work. I have gathered a few pieces and sketches by him which I really enjoy and hope to use as inspiration throughout my work.
I plan on creating some sketches in Woods style, to start generating ideas for my own work/characters. As I feel Woods style is really open and fast, which will hopefully keep the lines open and fast, creating something interesting and different.
I also enjoy his female characters Wood creates as I want to create my own female character for my work, so looking at Woods work will help me study the female form.

Protagonist and Antagonist Research
I have created a couple of mood boards of characters from films and games which I really like the style of and hope to take inspiration from them. Then eventually I want to bring aspects of these characters into my own work.
I then went on to create silhouettes from these mood boards, to help me explore the design of the characters further. To really see how to create a strong protagonist female character.
I did the same but for antagonist characters..
Although I didn't concentrate on just female characters like before as I'm a little unsure on what kind of character I'd like to create for this part. But I'm thinking of going along the lines of created a monster type character, rather than a defined male or female character.
I again then went on to create silhouettes from the characters I collected in the mood boards, to study them further.

Evaluation.. ( Bob Rafei )
I've chosen todo the 'Develop and Produce Concept Designs for Entertainment Production' brief, with key inspiration leads being Bob Rafei - Jack n Dexter Series and beyond, Dota 2 - Valve Corportation and Ashley Wood - Various Projects.
I've decided to start of with analysing Bob Rafei - Jack and Dexter, from the Combat Racing series.
Here are some further sketches by Rafei, but this time for the game Jak and Daxter which was released in 2001. Also made for the Play Station.
I've decided to start of with analysing Bob Rafei - Jack and Dexter, from the Combat Racing series.
I really enjoy Bobs style, with easily recognisable characters/genders etc. Something I hope to bring forward into my own work and concepts.
Here are some further sketches created by the artist Bob Rafei, for the game Crash Team Racing. Which was first released in 1999, for the PlayStation. I really like the style of the characters created here and hope to use these sketches as influence for my work. Also to fit with the brief, as Rafei is one of the key inspiration leads within the brief.
I enjoy these range of sketches more than the Crash Team Racing sketches. I think there is more variety and the sketches overall have more interest in them. I'm defiantly going to be using influence from these sketches into my own work.

Tone/Shade
For our week two class, we where challenged to do a few tonal studies of a few objects. Obviously tone/shade is key in any kind of art, if you want to bring it to life, bring it off the page/screen and make it more interesting and real-like. Without it the image/art can look very flat.
I drew some material and an empty cardboard box from some packaging. I did do these drawings quite quickly so they are not my best drawings ever, although I don't think they are too bad.
I think I got the shading/tones done quite well on the box, enough to make it clear what it is - a box. Maybe if I had drawn out a rough background, like what it was lying on etc it might have made it more real and clearer to read.
With the fabric, it's a little harder to decipher but drawing material is very hard! Although I did quite enjoy drawing the fabric. It was interesting to look at all the different shapes and colours it created, along with the shadow and tone. I think I captured the tone relatively well.

Perspective
For our week one we where given the task of drawing perspective drawings, around the university campus/building.
I chose todo a composition from outside the building, to try and achieve interesting angles and shapes. Which I think I have achieved!

I do find perspective quite challenging, as I prefer to keep within the rules when it comes to art. Although I tried my best and I think what I did achieve wasn't too bad. Still needs some improvment with angles and such but overall you get the idea!

Drawing People!
For out week three task we where given two hours to go out and about and draw people in movement etc. Two of my favourite things combined - people watching and drawing! Shouldn't be too challenging? Wrong. For me, drawing quickly with the subject moving and eventually disappearing can be frustrating. You can probably tell this by some of my drawings, as I do have a tendency to just give up on that particular subject. Perhaps something I need to improve on, that and being more confident in my own imagination. So I could just continue the subject, from either memory or just drawing what I want that person to look like?
As you can see from my quick sketches, I don't step too far from the pencil only occasionally using pen. Something I want to try more is indeed using only pens and not being afraid of my own mistakes. As sometimes mistakes are the best parts! Although clearly something I'm not afraid of is making a mess, when it comes to quick sketches. Which I think is a good thing! The 'mess' also gives the page more interest and movement.
When I got home I decided todo a few more sketches, while watching TV. Although this time I wanted to pay more attention to the faces, maybe trying to exaggerate their features more and give them a personality. I'm normally pretty terrified of drawing faces but obviously it's something I need to tackle head on - excuse the pun! So here they are...
I've only done a few to start with but pleasantly surprised with the outcome! Certainly something I'm going to try out more and hopefully the more detailed faces/expressions will show throughout more of my work!
