Self Evaluation

This has defiantly been a lot of work!
I feel  I may have rushed a few of the last things, particularly the promotional sheet although that is most likely down to me and time management. Something I will hopefully sort out for the next semester and the next brief.
Although on a positive note, I feel I have improved a lot in digital painting, particularly how long it takes me to do a painting. I've learnt a lot more techniques in photoshop also and for that I am glad.
I did find this semester challenging and there are things I'd like to go back and do differently or spend more time on but overall I'm happy with my work and I suppose that's the main thing!

Antagonist Posed Sheet

I started off my doing a few silhouettes of how Volermal could look, in different poses. I wanted to go for strong shape.

Antagonist Painted Sheet

Here is Volermal!
My Painted sheet for my antagonist character.
I decided to name him Volermal because not only does it make him sound badass,  it means flying evil in french (Voler le Mal). Since he evolved from vampire bats, his ancestors could originally fly.

Here I have my final Antagonist Line sheet!
I'm actually really happy with how this guy turned out and as you can see I chose number 6 from my weapon silhouettes and think it gives him the edge!

Antagonist Development

To begin my development on my Antagonist, I started off creating some quick silhouettes of how I had so far envisioned my character. Again I looked back at antagonists I had researched and consider what I'd found and tried to implement some of that into my own designs.

Here I took my favourite silhouette further and added a little more detail.

I then looked closer at the head of my character and played around with a few shapes and ideas. After receiving some feed back I settled on 3, as I feel it was the strongest shape and quickly identifiable as a silhouette.
I also really liked the fact it doesn't have eyes which I think adds to the creepy-ness of the character which is exactly what I was after!

I then came back to the full body and chose two of my favourite designs from my previous sheets, filling them in tonally made me see them more clearly and helped my to chose which design worked best.

I stuck with the top design and then went on to try out different colour schemes. I tried to implement the way in which they select colours for their characters in Dota 2. Starting off with picking a primary colour which you think best represents the character, then select and secondary and territory colour by using split complimentary colours. I may have edited this way of doing it a little but it helped a lot, as when choosing a colour scheme for a character (or anything) I think it can either be the downfall or what brings the piece to life!

I went for the bottom right colour scheme, then I redrew the character, editing him again slightly (gave him trousers, as a few people said he reminded them of Walter White from Breaking Bad). I used very highly saturated colours for this little experiment which as you can see, looks pretty shocking but I began mixing from the original palette to create colours a little easier on the eyes. Which I think will work a lot better for my character.

I then created some quick silhouettes for the weapon my character is going to be carrying. I wanted to design a new weapon, to fit with the characters style. I wanted it to look scary, big, heavy and dangerous!

Antagonist Research

I decided to go for a scary looking bat/human/cave creature, so started off creating a quick mood board of gathered pictures of particularly vampire bats and some generally creepy looking creatures.

I then took my my sketchbook again, to just get some ideas out onto the page and see what came out of it. I tired to consider the research I had done into antagonists previously and tried to incorporate some of what I had found into my own drawings and designs.

Protagonist Posed Sheet

Here I have my final posed sheet for my Protagonist character!
I started by creating some (basic) silhouettes of my character, to see which ones stood out the most and would be the most interesting and dynamic.

Protagonist Painted Sheet

Here, I have the painted character sheet of my Protagonist!
I decided to name her Koningin Vorentoe, which is Afrikaans for Queen Forward. I really wanted to make this character a positive energy type being/character.
The reason I chose the Afrikaans language is because Voodoo originated in Africa and I love the translations to Afrikaans from English, it makes everything sound so much more interesting! I also think this name continues to make this character seem strong and powerful, yet the meaning behind the name is still positive and with good intentions.

Protagonist Development

After playing around in my sketchbook I decided to start taking my designs and ideas into photoshop and start playing around digitally. Some of these sheets look a little messy but being messy is what Iam best at and I love to just get on with my ideas and get them all drawn up!

Here I have put together a bunch of quick silhouettes, from what I've researched and drawn up in my sketchbooks. The style/body shape I have gone for is similar to that of the Jak and Daxter female characters, I want the proportions to keep quite cartoonish but not too far, so the character is still recognisable as a female.
Even though these silhouettes are quite simple and maybe not immediately eye catching, I wanted to play around with the aspects of the character. Like colour and accessories, also the whole background/what kind of character it is. Which I think I can demonstrate in other ways, rather than with the silhouette in this case.
Something which I explore later on in the development process.

I took some of my favourite designs forward and drew more detail into them. I was going for a gothic, voodoo, warrier, magician type of character and I hope that has come through with my designs. I think it has!

I continued to play around more with some ideas and to see what I liked best, what I wanted to carry forward. Since this character is the Protagonist, I was pretty keen to use the colour green throughout the design, as I feel the colour green has connotations to positive things. Also because the character is to be a magical, mystical type creation I also wanted to incorporate positive energy (through the orbs) which again I think green is a good colour to use for this and to demonstrate this.

This is my final character design (roughly).
My whole idea behind her (yet to be named) is that she is a gothic voodoo priestess, the gun she carries is a magical orb firing gun. The orbs however can only be handled by herself, anything or anyone else they touch brings almost imminent death. She is a strong, independent character, not afraid of the horrors she may face.

Here, with my chosen design (which I continued to edit and change around from the previous design), I started playing around with different colour palettes. Obviously less is more with any design, so I tired to bare that in mind. I also wanted to keep saturated colours to a minimum. With black/grey/white being the main colours to this design.
