Sketchbook Sketches

I love doing things in my sketchbook, ultimately making a mess and hoping something semi good/interesting comes out of it!
This time I decided to do some studies of the female form, hopefully to help me when coming round to designing one of my characters. As I'm planning on creating a female protagonist.
I also decided to be brave with these studies and go straight in with a pig sharpie marker, I really love the bold clean lines I managed to achieve. Helped build my confidence, which is a great thing! I obviously used references for these studies.
Another favourite media of mine is watercolours, I'm obsessed! I feel they can bring any boring sketchbook page to life and actually make it look interesting. I'm a huge fan of using mixed media and creating texture, anything I can get my hands on I will use in my sketchbook in the hope of making it more appealing and different.

The last little study, is from one of Ashley Woods drawings which I became particularly drawn to. SO decided to give it a quick little bash of it myself.

Folling my quick female studies I decided to draw up a few shapes and try different costumes/styles out on them. In hope of kicking up some inspiration for my protagonist character!

Experimenting with styles

I did a quick experiment of merging a few styles, from the suggested inspiration in the brief. I combined the character Earth Spirit from Dota 2 and the general style from the Jak and Daxter games.

I was overall quite impressed with my attempt, as I am still fairly scared of the whole digital painting, particularly when it comes to creating something new. Rather than from a reference photo.

This style I have come up with combining these two games, is something I want to bring forward and use in my own characters. I want my characters to have a cartoony feel to the design. I feel the cartoony look comes across with the small head and really big feet. Not realistic proportions.

Dota Visual Guide

I have taken some of the most useful to my project, from the Dota Style Guide. I particularly find the value slides most useful and very interesting. Something which I will defiantly be making an effort to incorporate into my designs as I feel the value/tonal aspects of the art really push the work. Making the characters stand out and become even more eye catching which is ultimately what I want.

Dota 2

I have gathered some images of characters from Dota 2, specifically looking at the female characters and the monster type characters. As these are the types of characters I want to look into, into putting in my own work.

I went further and took some of my faveourite monsters and made them into silhouettes, to look more closely at them...
